India thrashed New Zealand by 372 runs in Mumbai at the Wankhede Stadium on Monday to register their first win and seal the two-match series by 1-0. Defending a target of 540 runs, Jayant Yadav and Ravichandran Ashwin took four wickets each as Axar got one in New Zealand’s second innings. Daryl Mitchell was the high scorer for New Zealand during the second innings with 60 runs to his name.
Meanwhile, the overnight batsman Henry Nicholls was dismissed for 44. Prior to this, Mayank Agarwal scored 150 runs in the first innings for India wherein New Zealand spinner Ajaz Patel became the third bowler to pick all 10 wickets in an innings of a test match. New Zealand may have been defeated by India but Ajaz’s heroic acts with the ball will be remembered for a long time.
In merely 45 minutes of gameplay on Day 4 at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, the Indian team led by Virat Kohli knocked out Kiwis for 167 runs. This is India’s biggest victory in Test cricket, when it come to the number of runs.
Daryl Mitchell attempted to counter Ashwin and also attack Jayant Yadav and Axar Patel. However, his wicket opened the floodgates as Tom Blundell was runout opting for a non-existent single.
Earlier, it was Ashwin, who got the new ball and instantly removed skipper Tom Latham with the help of an angled delivery. Will Young handed a simple catch to forward short leg and Ross Tayor who’s been a walking wicket, failed terribly in trying to slog sweep the wily off-spinner.
