Yogi Adityanath is commonly perceived as a Hindu nationalist, who is judged for the saffron colour he wears. However, I believe both saffron and socialism can go together. Let’s begin with the colour itself. What is saffron?
The most sacred colour in Hinduism, saffron colour signifies sacrifice, religious abstinence, quest for light and salvation. The colour is often worn by sanyasis, which Yogi Adityanath is. People who follow this lifestyle, leave their homes to find the real purpose of life. This is what socialism demands – to sacrifice your own life and work for the good of people.
Considering this, I believe saffron socialist is the right word for Yogi Adityanath, as the title of the biography says. Revealing the real side of the UP Chief Minister, Yogi Aditynath: The Rise of a Saffron Socialist is an incredible journey of a man who comes from a small village. He has become what he is through rigorous training that he got through various aspects of life.
However, Yogi Adityanath is not the only BJP leader to have an incredible journey of attaining a powerful position despite having a not-so-strong background. The Prime Minister of India, Narendra Modi is another great example in this case. The Saffron Book is about Yogi, whose inspiring odyssey had a humble beginning and reached a position that matters.
Pravin Kumar has finely portrayed the story of this man who came from a village in Uttarakhand, who perhaps did not have the luxuries or even access to basic resources, yet climbed the political ladder and became the Chief Minister of India’s largest and most influential state in March 2017.
Yogi Adityanath: The Rise of a Saffron Socialist is a biography that answers several questions about Yogi Adityanath, and the journey.
