Bahraich Violence Aftermath: 50 arrested and Internet shut down Continues

The recent violence in Bahraich has left the city grappling with a tense aftermath. In response to the unrest, which saw clashes between communities, the authorities have taken stern measures, including the arrest of 50 individuals, the shutdown of private schools and the extension of an internet shutdown for the second consecutive day. The situation highlights the challenges in maintaining law and order while balancing civil liberties.

 

Bahraich Violence

In Bahraich’s Mahasi area, Uttar Pradesh, a clash erupted between two communities during a Durga idol immersion procession on Sunday. The violence broke out as the procession passed through a Muslim neighborhood, leading to an argument between the groups. A person from the Hindu community was killed by gunfire, and several others were injured.

Tensions further escalated when thousands gathered outside the hospital demanding justice for the deceased youth. The situation worsened when vehicles were set on fire and several houses were vandalized, prompting the deployment of additional forces in the area.

“The situation is now under control. The area (Mahsi) has been divided into two zones and 12 sectors, with 12 companies of the PAC deployed. Other senior officials from the district administration have been sent to the area, and shift-wise duties have been assigned to officials to monitor the situation round the clock,” said District Magistrate Monica Rani.

Officials have been instructed to assess the losses incurred by residents so that they can be compensated accordingly, as informed by Magistrate Monica Rani.

 

 

Government and Law Enforcement Response

In response to the violence, the Uttar Pradesh government deployed extra police forces and took action to restore order, arresting 50 people to prevent further unrest. An internet shutdown was imposed to curb misinformation and mobilisation, but its extension has sparked criticism. Many residents struggle with the disruption and cannot access online resources, conduct business, or attend virtual classes. At the same time, communication has also been hampered, making it hard for people to stay informed or seek help. Although the government aims to prevent rumours, the extended restrictions raise concerns about striking the right balance between safety and digital rights.

 

Political and Legal Implications

Political reactions have been mixed, with opposition leaders questioning the effectiveness of the government’s measures, while community leaders urge a more nuanced approach to the unrest. In response, the government has taken action against specific police officials to ensure accountability. The Station House Officer (SHO) of Hardi police station and the officer in charge of the Mahsi area have been removed. Additionally, CO Rupendra Gaur has been dismissed, and CO Ravi Khokhar from Rampur has been appointed as the new CO for Mahsi in Bahraich.
