The recent arrests by the CBI’s Special Investigation Team (SIT) in the Tirupati laddoo case, including the MD of AR Dairy and representatives from Bhole Baba Dairy and Vaishnavi Dairy, should not be dismissed as just another fleeting news item. Instead, it should serve as a wake-up call—an unsettling reminder that even the most revered institutions are not immune to the corrosive effects of corruption. While the SIT’s swift action is commendable, the very necessity of such an investigation raises disturbing questions about governance and ethics within the Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD).
The Tirupati laddoo is more than just a sweet; it is a symbol of faith and a tangible blessing received by millions of pilgrims who visit Tirumala each year. It represents devotion, tradition, and the sacred connection between the devotee and Lord Venkateswara. To adulterate this symbol for profit is not just a crime but a sacrilege. As Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu alleged, the ghee used in making the laddoos was adulterated with animal fat, triggering outrage among devotees of the famous temple.
The idea that individuals within the system would compromise the purity of the laddoo for personal gain is deeply troubling. It suggests not just isolated incidents of corruption but a systemic issue within the TTD. The investigation revealed serious violations in the ghee supply process, with irregularities at every stage. Representatives of Vaishnavi Dairy secured tenders in the name of AR Dairy and fabricated documents to claim that the ghee was sourced from Bhole Baba Dairy.
The scale of the issue is staggering. The TTD uses 15,000 kg of cow ghee daily for preparing Tirumala laddoos. AR Foods from Tamil Nadu secured a tender to supply the ghee at ₹320 per kg. On July 8, 2024, eight tankers of ghee arrived, and four of them were sent to laboratories for testing. The NDDB lab reports, released on July 17, 2024, confirmed the presence of adulterants in the ghee. These findings reinforce the urgent need for stricter quality control measures.
The controversy surrounding this case extends beyond the adulteration of a sacred offering. It highlights the erosion of trust in an institution that should be beyond reproach. Devotees who offer their time, money, and faith to the TTD deserve transparency and accountability in the management of temple affairs. The Telugu Desam Party (TDP) has accused the previous Jagan Mohan Reddy government of “playing with the most pious of offerings in Tirupati.”
This is not just a legal issue—it is a moral imperative. The TTD must take swift and decisive action to restore public trust. This includes:
Recognizing the gravity of the situation, the Supreme Court has stepped in, forming a new SIT to replace the state-appointed SIT to ensure an impartial investigation. The sanctity of the Tirupati laddoo, and the faith it represents, must be protected at all costs.
The Tirupati laddoo case serves as a critical test for the CBI to expose and dismantle the adulteration racket. More than that, it is a call to ensure that what is sacred remains sacred. Institutions like the TTD must recognize their responsibility in upholding the purity of religious traditions and the trust of millions of devotees. This case must not be brushed under the rug; it should mark the beginning of a rigorous reform process to protect the integrity of one of India’s most revered religious institutions.
