Power T&D sector presents huge opportunity, says C.K. Thakur, President & CEO, Power, Punj LLoyd

Known for undertaking truly mega-scale projects in India and abroad, Global Conglomerate Punj Lloyd has diversified in to the Power T&D sector in India. Termed by various industry analysts as a rather “humble” sector, Punj Lloyd views it as a sector offering an array of opportunities. The Government of India has identified T&D sector for major investments to meet the growing power demand and to meet the “Power for All” target. The Government of India envisages investment of about 3 lakh crore over the next few years. This presents a huge opportunity for Punj Lloyd.

Official spokesperson for Punj Lloyd said, “Our foray into the T&D sector has been modestly successful. Having bagged two projects from Power Grid Corporation of India and two with NTPC, Punj Lloyd has established a strong foothold. These projects have been awarded under Rajiv Gandhi Grameen Vidyutikaran Yojana of 12^th plan (2012-2017).”

C.K. Thakur, President & CEO, Power, Punj Lloyd Ltd. said, “The project activities—survey, engineering, procurement etc—have already commenced to meet the project completion time of 18 months. The scope envisages approximately 3,000 villages per project and around 60,000 connections per project. Apart from the Power T&D space, we are also looking at transmission lines and substation work.”

Punj Lloyd has also won its first power project from BHEL for the civil, structural and architectural work of the non-plant works and raw water reservoir, roads and drains at the 800 mw-Kothagudem Thermal Power Project in Khammam District, Telangana.  The order from BHEL also marks Punj Lloyd’s debut in the power plant (balance of plant) space. “We have already executed several prestigious balance of plant work in the past, and it is a regular business for Punj Lloyd Power. The company has been involved with the 600-mw thermal power plant in Chandrapur, Maharashtra, the 540-mw thermal power plant for GVK in Punjab and the 500-mw Chhabra thermal power plant for Rajasthan Rajya Vidyut Utpadan Nigam Ltd and the 1,000-mw Raigarh Thermal Power for Jindal Power Ltd in Chhattisgarh.”, C.K.
