President Pranab Mukherjee on Thursday inaugurated the golden jubilee celebrations of the Bharati Vidyapeeth in Pune.

On the occasion, a souvenir was released, with its first copy being presented to President Mukherjee. He also inaugurated a golden jubilee museum and a golden jubilee sanshodhan bhavan.

Speaking on the occasion, the President said that he was happy to be present for the celebrations, reminiscing that he had earlier visited the campus in 2010.

President Mukherjee also noted that the Bharati Vidyapeeth had transformed into one of the largest educational organisations in the country, with 160 educational units from pre-primary to post-graduate and doctoral levels.

He further said that India has a repository of over 700 universities and 36,000 colleges. However, he said that despite this physical expansion of higher education, the quality of education in most institutes is below par, finding serious concern over the fact that none of India’s universities finds a place amongst the top 200 positions in world university rankings.

The President also said that private educational institutions play an important role in the higher education sector worldwide, taking the examples of Harvard, Yale and Stanford Universities.

He also said that every academic institution has a duty to imbibe in their students’ social consciousness.
