Oscar-winning movie Joker has been banned from Indian TV screening. The Film Certificate Appellate Tribunal has taken the decision to not allow the film to be aired on television as the movie “glorifies violence”.
“We tend to agree that the film glorifies violence and in as it is seen by non-adults, it would have a lasting effect on their impressionable minds”, said FCAT. Hypocritically enough, there are numerous other Bollywood movies that have been screened that glorify violence. These Bollywood movies have not glorified violence but also made use of profane language in them. Mentioned below are some of the many violent movies that have been constituted with promoting violence on-screen:
Gangs of Wasseypur
Directed by Anurag Kashyap, this movie is focused on power struggles, politics and vengeance between three families. Despite of the movie being filled with profanities and violence; it has been screened numerously on television.
NH 10
NH 10 is a movie inspired by some real-life honour killing murder cases. The movie is extremely graphics comprising of murders and violence.
Raman Raghav
Raman Raghav is a psychological thriller, much like the movie Joker. Directed by Anurag Kashyap, this movie is about a psycho killer on the loose. It has a series of murders including that of children.
Rakta Charitra
Rakta Charitra, comprising some of the leading actors in the industry, has also made it to the list. The movie has been often aired on television.
Ram-Leela
Ram-Leela is a movie that focused on two rival families. The movie is filled with double-meaning language as well as violence.
Badlapur
Badlapur is a 2015 Indian Hindi-language neo-noir action thriller film directed by Sriram Raghavan, based on the novel Death’s Dark Abyss by Italian writer Massimo Carlotto.
Ek Villian
The story is written by Milap Zaveri and Vihan Malik. It stars Sidharth Malhotra, Shraddha Kapoor and Riteish Deshmukh, and is about a hardened criminal whose terminally ill wife is murdered by a sadistic serial killer.
Haider
Haider is a 2014 Indian crime drama written, produced and directed by Vishal Bhardwaj. The movie is set amidst the insurgency-hit Kashmir conflicts of 1995 and civilian disappearances. Itis a modern-day adaptation of William Shakespeare’s tragedy Hamlet. The movie is also based on Basharat Peer’s memoir Curfewed Night.
Vaastav
“The Reality” as described by the film’s tagline, refers to the harsh realities of life in the Mumbai underworld. The film is said to be loosely based on the life of Mumbai underworld gangster Chhota Rajan.
Gulaal
It explores the themes such as pursuit of power, quest for legitimacy, perceived injustices and hypocrisy of the powerful. The plot is provided by student politics of a university and a fictitious secessionist movement consisting of former Rajput leaders who have become present-day elite.
With the villainous movies becoming a trend in the Bollywood industry, for them to ban an Oscar-winning movie is not only being considered disrespectful but also receiving a lot of backlash.
