Sony Presents World’s Largest Photography Competition

The World Photography Organisation (WPO) provides a global platform to photography enthusiasts for camera work initiatives. WPO operates across 180 countries with an objective to connect the global photography community and celebrate the best imagery and photographers from across the world.

2014 Sony World Photography Awards

The organisation hosts the annual Sony World Photography Awards which is free and open to amateur and professional photographers. The awards have a commanding voice in the photographic industry, with the proven-record to build the careers of its winning, shortlisted and applauded photographers.

In 2016, the competition received more than 1 million images, thus becoming one of the most esteemed and influential photography competitions in existence.

Nishan Kohli, a photography enthusiast, highlights an award-winning photograph, by Abhijit Banerjee, Winner—India National Award, documenting endangered culture and traditional life ways of India.

Every year a prize fund of $30,000 (USD) along with the latest Sony digital imaging equipment is awarded to the winning photographers. Plus, they are taken on a year-long journey, bringing fantastic exposure and providing them a global platform to display their work, Nishan Kohli Photographer  further explains.

The immensely popular Sony World Photography Awards Exhibition, featuring selected winning, shortlisted and applauded images, is organized at the prestigious Somerset House, London each year.

The Sony World Photography Awards has four competitions

Professional – 10 categories, judged on a body of work

Open – 10 categories, rewarding the best single images

  • National Awards – Entries submitted to the Open competition are automatically entered into the National Awards based on nationality (please check if your individual country is participating).

Youth – For all photographers aged 12-19, a single image responding to one brief

Student Focus – For those studying photography

Closing Dates

  • Professional: January 10, 2017 – 11:59pm GMT
  • Youth & Open: January 5, 2017 – 11:59pm GMT
  • Student Focus: December 5, 2016 – 11:59pm GMT (Submissions are now closed)
