The Maharashtra government has announced a slew of new COVID-19 guidelines and imposed a fresh lockdown in Yavatmal and Amaravati to curb the increasing number of COVID cases. A 10-day lockdown has been imposed in Yavatmal whereas, a weekend lockdown is imposed in Amravati. Additionally, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has released new COVID guidelines for Mumbai.
Both Amravati and Yavatmal are located in the Vidarbha region and since the starting of February, this area has been reporting a steady rise in the COVID cases. The administration in the Yavatmal district has set a limit on the public gatherings and closure of the schools that were reopened for selected classes.
As per the orders by Yavatmal collector DM Singh, only 50 persons will be permitted at weddings and the religious places will be open with strict implementation of COVID protocols.
Till 28th February, all the schools from Classes 5 to 9, colleges and coaching classes in the Yavatmal district will remain closed. The restaurants and hotels in this district will be operational between 8 am to 9.30 pm only whereas, the markets and shops will be open till 8 pm.
On the other side, Amravati Collector Shailesh Naval has ordered a weekend lockdown in the district, from 8 pm on Saturday till 7 am on Monday. During this lockdown period, essential services will be unaffected but the markets and other establishments will remain shut. He added that all the establishments in the district, including hotels and restaurants, will be open till 8 pm on weekdays.
Coming to the state capital Mumbai, the civic body has ordered to deploy around 300 marshals to take action against the passengers flouting COVID guidelines while travelling in suburban railways.
As per the authorities, people violating the rules for home isolation, weddings, and public gatherings will be prosecuted. These new measures are introduced after Maharashtra reported a sudden hike in the number of new COVID cases.
