Dr J S Rajkumar delivered laparoscopic surgical workshop at Al Hayat Hospital

Oman’s first day-long live audio-visual surgical workshop on laparoscopic surgery was conducted successfully at Al Hayat International Hospital recently.

The main operating surgeon Dr J S Rajkumar, senior consultant surgeon at Al Hayat, demonstrated a series of surgeries to the audience of surgeons, physicians, and resident doctors from The Royal Hospital, SQU Hospital, Armed Forces Medical Services, Atlas Hospital, KIMS, Badr al Sama, Starcare, MPH, etc.

Dr Rajkumar, present in the operation theatre, explained the surgical techniques and had a seamless interaction with an audience of keen peers in the conference room, via a two-way audio and video link.

The proceedings were moderated by Dr Faisal Alam, head, department of surgery, The Royal Hospital, Dr Taha al Lawati, surgical oncologist, The Royal Hospital, and Dr K P Raman. Active participants included Dr Hind Khalifa al Majrafi, senior specialist, The Royal Hospital, Dr Badar Aflah al Hadhrami, surgeon, The Royal Hospital, and Dr Riyaz Ahmed, senior consultant, The Royal Hospital.

Dr Rajkumar demonstrated the mini gastric bypass surgery, the latest procedure for the control of obesity and diabetes; sleeve gastrectomy, and inguinal hernia; all performed laparoscopically (key-hole).

The proceedings witnessed a dynamic, interactive exchange between the surgeons and Dr Rajkumar, who said, “I am happy that Al Hayat management and Dr Raman have taken this initiative, which I believe is happening for the first time in Oman. Thanks are also due to the patients who consented for the live video, and the participating doctors who made this event an important milestone in medical education in Oman.”

Mini gastric bypass, a surgical technique introduced for the first time in Oman by Al Hayat a few months ago, not only results in weight reduction but also reverses diabetes, hypertension, and dyslipidemia, with all the patients who had undergone this procedure reporting excellent alteration in their metabolic profile. Their diabetes almost disappeared, enabling them to reduce their medication, including statins. For people fearing bariatric surgery complications, the MGB is an ideal ‘middle of the road’ surgical approach where the objective of correction of metabolic abnormalities is achieved with minimal risk of complication.

Dr Raman, chairman, Al Hayat, said, “The use of live surgery as a technique for the dissemination of surgical knowledge is widely practiced in western countries, as it facilitates an efficient way to demonstrate, explain and teach surgical techniques to an audience of peers. We are grateful to Muscat Pharmacy for their generosity in supporting and sponsoring this event. The holding of this workshop is in line with our constant endeavour to bring not only the best technology and medical practices to the sultanate but also to aid the medical community in Oman to enrich their knowledge which will help them to serve their patients more effectively.”

Dr Alam said, “The participants got an opportunity to observe the live procedures with decisions taken on real time, which exposed them to the challenges and intricacies of a surgery.” Dr Lawati said, “The exercise provided a dynamic educational platform for the audience as the surgeon shared his knowledge with the aid of first hand visuals of the operation and the two-way communication with the participants during the live procedures.”

The first Indian surgeon and the second in the world to use Google Glass to beam live surgeries to the whole world, Dr Rajkumar presented pre-recorded videos of unusual surgeries, some performed for the first time in South India, including laparoscopic Whipple for pancreatic cancer.
