In the heart of Hyderabad, India, a fantastic endeavor has recently come to fruition: the country’s first solar-powered cycling track. This innovative project promotes a healthy lifestyle, spanning an impressive 23 kilometers and equipped with three dedicated lanes. It generates a remarkable 16 megawatts (MW) of solar power. This endeavor is the second of its kind globally, following South Korea’s pioneering solar rooftop-covered track. As sustainability takes center stage, similar solar cycling tracks are sprouting up in Dubai and Switzerland, heralding a new era of eco-friendly infrastructure.
Since October 2, 2023, the solar cycling track, aptly named “Healthway,” has welcomed cycling enthusiasts around the clock, ensuring accessibility 365 days a year. Divided into two lines, the pink line spans 8.5 kilometers from Nanakramguda to the Telangana State Police Academy (TSPA). In contrast, the blue line stretches 14.5 kilometers from the Narsinghi hub to Kollur. Ensuring the safety of cyclists, the track features three dedicated lanes, offering a secure and uninterrupted cycling experience.
During the track’s inauguration, K.T. Rama Rao, the Telangana Municipal Administration, and Urban Development Minister, lauded the project’s unique design and concept. What sets the Hyderabad track apart is its length and the thoughtful amenities accompanying it. With five access points that provide facilities such as parking, food stalls, cycle repair shops, rental stations, first aid stations, and rest areas, Healthway offers a comprehensive experience to cyclists. The inclusion of state-of-the-art signaling further enhances safety.
One of the track’s most remarkable features is its integration of renewable energy. A staggering 16,000 solar panels adorn the track, generating an impressive 16 MW of solar power. This renewable energy source illuminates the track’s golden LED lights and powers essential infrastructure, including the drip irrigation system, toll operations, and highway traffic management system. This project reduces electricity costs for the Hyderabad Metropolitan Development Authority (HMDA) by harnessing the sun’s energy. It contributes to a cleaner and greener future.
Installing elevated solar panels along Hyderabad’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) presented unique challenges. Hyderabad’s fluctuating radiation levels, which resulted in approximately 40 days of low power production, required a system designed to compensate for these fluctuations. Moreover, the changing terrain posed its own set of challenges, necessitating meticulous planning and precision engineering. Collaboration with experts from leading Indian educational institutions further ensured the project’s success.
As the sun sets on conventional infrastructure, projects like India’s first solar cycling track illuminate the path toward a healthier and more sustainable future. It is not merely a cycling track but a commitment to renewable energy, public health, and urban planning that prioritizes sustainability. With plans to connect Healthway with other roads, Hyderabad’s stride toward non-motorized transport (NMT) promises a brighter and cleaner urban landscape.
The Hyderabad solar cycling track offers several environmental benefits, including:
A number of other solar cycling tracks are planned or under construction around the world, including:
Healthway is a shining example of forward-thinking technology and collaboration between government, citizens, and educational institutions in a world grappling with environmental challenges. As Hyderabad’s cycling community rejoices in their newfound haven, this solar-powered cycling track underscores the power of innovation in reshaping cities for a greener and more active future.
