The reason behind this lowest power shortage in past half a decade, has been possible because of the hydropower stations specially made in neighbouring Bhutan, which is a surplus of the country. India is importing Bhutan’s power surplus from the stations, which were established in Bhutan with Indian Government’s assistance.
Goyal further informed the parliament that the power, which was imported from Bhutan, was almost 5 billion units (BU) during Financial Year 2015-2016.Records tell that demand and supply gap resulted in electricity shortage, which stood at 3.6% during the financial year 2014-15 and witnessed 4.2% in 2013-14, followed by 8.7% electricity shortage during FY 2012-13.
Goyal also clarified, “During the 12th Plan period, a target of 88,537 MW excluding 30,000 MW of Renewal Energy source, was fixed for capacity addition. Against this, the cumulative capacity addition of 84,990.7 MW has been achieved as on March 31, 2016.”
In a different reply, the Power Minister mentioned that there is no shortage of coal in the country. None of the coal-based power generation plants across the country has reported any loss of generation due to the shortage of coal during 2015-16.
To this entire scenario, the Chairman of Hindustan Powerprojects Pvt Ltd (HPPPL), Ratul Puri expressed his satisfaction on lowest power shortage’s record that India recently made with 2.1%. Ratul Puri led Hindustan Powerprojects focuses on catering the power-related needs of India, via renewable energy and the power giant has already set up solar energy plants in numerous parts of the Nation.
Piyush Goyal also talked about RLNG where he said, “Due to government initiative, the scheme of utilisation of RLNG (Regassified Liquefied Natural Gas) helped in improving the generation from gas based power stations. During 2015-16, the growth of generation from gas-based power station was 14.6% over the same period last year.”
On the other hand, he didn’t forget to highlight the current scenario, where the deficit in domestic gas’ availability is common.
