The Top 10 Stories that Rocked in Year 2016

The year is slowly coming to an end. Year 2016 witnessed major events that made a huge impact on the world, and it will influence the future greatly. We were moved to tears when tragedies struck but some proud moments brought smiles to our face. Let’s look at the top 10 stories that shaped 2016:

Reliance Jio apps were launched on Google Play. The service provides users free internet data for 90 days with a mind-boggling speed. This can only be activated using a Reliance Jio SIM.

ISRO Launches INSAT 3DR, a weather satellite launched through GSLV. INSAT 3DR carries a multispectral imager, Sounder, and a Data Relay Transponder. The satellite also includes a search and rescue transponder to pick up distress beacons.

North Korea tested a nuclear warhead. It’s the fifth of its kind since 2006 and it drew international condemnation. Despite the Six-Party Talks, North Korea went ahead with its nuclear ambitions.

India wins 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze medal in 2016 Summer Paralympics at Rio De Janeiro. Mariyappan Thangavelu, Devendra Jhaharia, Deepa Malik and Varun Singh Bhati contributed to India’s spectacular performance.

Indian Army conducted surgical strikes on the Pakistani side of LOC. As many as 17 army elites destroyed multiple militant camps. It was the first time in history that India publically confirmed a cross-border operation.

PM Narendra Modi announces demonetization of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 denominations. The move was aimed at recovering black money and taking counter-measures against black money hoarders and corruption. Moreover, new Rs 2000 bills were introduced.

 

Donald Trump wins the US presidential race. He defeated Hillary Clinton with 306 electoral votes whereas Hillary Clinton could only attract 232 votes.The result was met with a lot of protests by a small section of American voters.

India and Japan sign a historic nuclear deal. The agreement will allow Japan to export nuclear fuel and technology to India. India’s nuclear energy sector will benefit a lot with this accord. It also serves as a deterrent to the malicious intents of China.

Tamil Nadu CM J Jayalalitha passes away at the age of 68 after suffering a cardiac arrest. Her demise has affected the entire country.

PM Narendra Modi wins TIME online poll for the Person of the Year. Although he couldn’t win the actual title, PM Modi managed to score 19% of the votes. Donald Trump was announced as the winner. He managed to garner only 7% of the votes.
