7 casualties confirmed in Jammu & Kashmir terror attack: 3rd attack in one Week

An armed militant on Sunday killed seven individuals working on a tunnel project in the Kashmir region. The casualties include five migrant workers, one designer, and a Kashmir-based doctor. According to a police officer, the heavily armed militant aimed to cause maximum casualties.

The attack has sparked shock and outrage across the country, with government officials condemning the act and the public expressing grief and concern over the region’s ongoing unrest.

Incident Details

The attack occurred at a construction site for the Z Morh tunnel near Gagangir on the Srinagar-Sonmarg road, marking the second such attack on migrant workers since the formation of the new government in Jammu and Kashmir. Armed with automatic weapons, the militant launched a targeted assault on workers and staff at the site, resulting in the deaths of seven individuals, including five migrant workers, one designer, and a local doctor.

Fortunately, the incident did not injure any security personnel. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has arrived at the scene for forensic analysis and is expected to take over the investigation.

According to eyewitnesses, the militant opened fire without warning, causing chaos and panic among the workers. Local police officials confirmed that the attacker was heavily armed and intent on causing maximum harm, leading to an immediate lockdown of the area.

Government and Security Response

Security forces swiftly responded to the attack by securing the area and launching a search operation to locate the militant responsible. The site was cordoned off, and additional forces were deployed to prevent further violence and ensure the safety of nearby workers and civilians.

According to a police officer, the militant was heavily armed and had spent a significant amount of time at the camp office, with the attack seemingly aimed at causing maximum casualties. Government officials quickly condemned the violence, with the Union Home Minister calling it a heinous act against innocent workers.

Newly elected J&K Chief Minister Farooq Abdullah also condemned the attack, blaming Pakistan and expressing sorrow over the loss of lives, particularly migrant laborers and a doctor, while questioning the motives of the terrorists.

Condemnation and National Reactions

The Union Home Minister condemned the attack as a senseless act of violence against innocent civilians, promising swift justice for the victims. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and J&K Chief Minister Omar Abdullah also denounced the crime, calling it an attempt to destabilise the region. Social media was flooded with messages of grief and outrage, as citizens across the country expressed solidarity with the victims and their families.

The investigation into the Kashmir terror attack is ongoing, with security forces searching for the perpetrators. Authorities also consider increased security measures to protect residents and prevent future incidents.
