Clashes in Haryana Lead to Casualties and Property Damage

Nuh district in Haryana witnessed a disturbing incident on Monday when clashes broke out between two groups, resulting in 6 deaths and injuries to atleast 70 people, including policemen. The deceased people also include the Naib Imam or deputy Imam of the Anjuman Jama Masjid in Gurugram’s Sector 57, intensifying the situation. The violence initially erupted during a Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) procession when a mob began pelting stones at the participants, leading to retaliatory actions. The violence however, as not remained confined to Nuh district; it has spread to neighboring areas, including Gurugram. The unrest has also resulted in looting and vandalism of shops in Gurugram’s Badshahpur area. About 44 cases have already been registered by the police and more than 115 people have been arrested in connection with the communal violence.

The confrontation began around 2 pm when a crowd of more than 200 people started walking from Edward Chowk in Nuh town. Stones were thrown at the VHP procession, prompting them to flee initially, but they later retaliated. Reports indicate that the trigger for the clash might have been an objectionable video posted on social media by a Bajrang Dal activist in Ballabhgarh.

The situation worsened when Monu Manesar, a cow vigilante previously involved in a murder case, was rumored to join the procession. However, on the advice of the VHP, he did not participate to avoid further tensions. There were also threats on social media daring him to come to Nuh.

In response to the escalating situation, companies requested employees to work from home, private banks closed operations early, and all educational institutions in Gurugram remained closed on Tuesday. The Vishva Hindu Parishad has called for a protest on Wednesday to express their discontent with the ongoing riots in the Mewat region. Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar acknowledged that there seemed to be a “well thought out conspiracy behind the clashes,” as both the religious procession attendees and law enforcement officers were targeted.

Authorities have increased patrolling in the national capital, Delhi, to address any potential spillover of violence from neighboring regions. Security has been strengthened in the adjoining districts of Nuh — Faridabad, Palwal, and Gurugram — to prevent further unrest.

While Gurugram’s Deputy Commissioner, Nishant Yadav, claimed that the situation is now under control and normalcy has been restored, the incident raises concerns about the fragile state of communal relations in the region. As we move forward, it is essential to address the underlying issues that fuel such clashes and work towards promoting tolerance and understanding among different communities.
