BJP sweeps MCD polls, stays away from celebrations owing to death of 25 CISF men in Sukma

MCD poll results – The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is set to retain the three municipal corporations in Delhi for the third term in a row. The party has been ruling the national capital for a decade now, and this Delhi Municipal Corporations (MCD) polls too, it hasn’t wavered from its position. Its strong contender, the Aam Aaadmi Party (AAP) has met a humiliating defeat, and the Congress has been tailing in the third position with mostly singular digit wins.

The elections to MCD were held on 23 April that saw a turnout of 53.58%, a tad bit higher than the attendance recorded in 2012. The counting of votes for the Delhi municipal elections began at 8am on Wednesday. Right from the beginning, the results indicated that the saffron party is going to emerge as the winner. With the win of BJP, and more importantly the pathetic show of AAP and Congress, the political ramifications in Delhi are going to be volatile.

The MCD poll results is an indicator of a bigger national wave of the BJP, and it’s going to add to its image of being a compulsive winner, and break the morale of the Opposition in the run up to the general elections to be slated in 2019.

Three main players in the MCD polls AAP, BJP and the Congress had heavily campaigned ahead of the polls, with each promising a clean city, besides providing adequate civic facilities. Each party was hoping to make it to the winner’s podium, notwithstanding the exit poll that had predicted a landslide victory for the BJP.

Heading towards a clean sweep, the BJP decided to key the winning celebrations low-key. Instead of party workers doing the usual victory dance with drummers, and holi colours, the party dedicated its imminent win to the martyred CRPF personnel in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma district. Delhi BJP chief actor-turned-politician Manoj Tiwari said that the party will not celebrate its victory, as “every heart is filled with grief over the killing of 25 CRPF men in Sukma.”
