Nvidia releases new generation graphic cards

There’s good news for gamers and computer nerds. The renowned GPU-manufacturing company, Nvidia, has released the much awaited Turing architecture based GPU. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang revealed the RTX 20 Series GPUs in Cologne, Germany, during a pre-Gamescom 2018 press briefing on Monday.

The main attraction of RTX 20 Series is the realtime ray tracing technology, which is said to be the biggest graphic jump in the recent years. With realtime ray tracing, light sources in the graphics react to objects as light would in reality. The light’s properties complement the material being struck, and emulate the angle and color to exude realism. It is then traced further with multiple rays to mimic reflected light.

The RTX 20 Series includes RTX 2070, RTX 2080, and RTX 2080 Ti. Nvidia is offering the Founders Edition of the respective GPUs at $599, $799, and $1,199. Other vendors that include Asus, EVGA, Gigabyte, MSI, and PNY may sell them at $499, $699, and $999 respectively.

RTX 20 Series is up to six times faster than its predecessor, the GTX series that use Pascal architecture. In fact, according to CEO Huang, RTX 2070, the least expensive card in the RTX series, outruns 2017’s GeForce GTX Titan Xp. The graphics will be also enhanced by Turing architecture’s powerful AI system.

Games tailored for the RTX include Battlefield V, Shadow of the Tomb Raider, and Metro Exodus. The Battlefield V RTX trailer was beautified with realistic reflections and lighting. Shadow of the Tomb Raider gave an excellent presentation of the realistic shadow, created by the realtime ray tracing.

There were some skeptic reviews of the same as the press briefing did not cover the benchmark on majority of the non-RTX games. One of the tweeters tweeted, “Loved the @nvidia presentation at #Gamescom2018. My only concern with this new “RTX OPS” benchmark is that there is no comparison for non-RTX enabled games. I would have liked to see more info how a 2080Ti compares to a 1080Ti for my current (non-rtx) games?”

For now, gamers are being advised to wait on these new graphic cards. More reviews will reveal if the GPUs are worth buying or Nvidia will have to make amends.
