American Express, a credit card issuer firm, pledged Rs 9 crore for combating the COVID-19 pandemic in India, on Thursday. According to the company statement they said that the amount will be aimed to provide financial support to the front-liners during this global crisis.
In addition to this, the statement also said that the amount is inclusive of the contributions made to the PM CARES Fund and other local organizations in India. This contribution will help provide financial support to frontline healthcare workers, help feed people, the impacted communities, support the development of vaccines and research and, among other critical needs.
Manoj Adlakha, American Express Banking Corp Senior Vice President and Country Manager, said, “While we are doing everything possible to keep our colleagues and their families safe, we are also constantly striving to make a positive contribution and meaningful connection with the communities in which we live and work.”
AMEX is also said to partner for ‘Hunger Heroes’ initiative, helping in the distribution of essential supplies and dry ration to the severely impacted families of 10,000 food delivery riders. The project is set to be implemented across India, with a specific focus in tier-2 and tier-3 cities where e-commerce logistics and online food delivery services have been affected the most due to COVID-19 lockdown. They have also partnered with a collective good foundation, Samhita to procure PPE kits and other essentials for healthcare and sanitation workers among other things like isolation kits and beds for hospitals to support the infrastructure in NCR, Pune, Bangalore and Mumbai.
As per the Health Ministry’s data, the death toll due to COVID-19 rose to 8,102 and the number of cases climbed to 2,86,579 in India after it registered the highest single-day spike of 357 fatalities and 9,996 cases till Thursday 8 AM.
